Shining Star – September 2020
Karen Hummel and Angie Hill, Preston Elementary
Nominated by: Tammy Brown, Principal
When I received the new Staff Shining Star application, I knew exactly who was receiving my first nomination. Karen Hummel and Angie Hill have worked since March 13th to meet the needs of our families.
When we closed schools last March, the one thing that continued in the buildings was food service. My ladies were here each and every day from March to May to prepare and package meals and help families. They would not only do the preparing of the meals - they would also help carry things to the car, have conversations with our families and make sure there wasn't anything else they needed. On top of the breakfast and lunch preparation and distribution, we have donations come in weekly for dinners that they are also more than happy to take care of for the families.
Karen and Angie not only help Preston families: they help any and all Black Tiger families that come through our doors. I have heard on more than one occasion that people come over to Preston because the ladies are so friendly and helpful. They show Black Tiger Pride every day.
Information on the Summit County Health Department website reminds us that eating nutritious food is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. They also provide a mountain of research which suggests that healthy nutrition radically improves children's cognitive function and measurable academic achievement. These ladies are essential members of the team that helps meets the nutritional needs of our students. They are giving them a healthy foundation so the learning can begin.
This past week they prepared 902 meals to be ready for the Monday distribution. They handed out 848 meals in one day.
These women are superheroes and I appreciate them so very much. They work tirelessly to meet a basic need for our students which helps them be ready to receive the instruction for the day.
The CDC reports that eating a healthy diet and being physically active not only can improve the health of students but also improve their academic achievement. Thanks to these ladies, our students have step one taken care of!!
